When should I start taking Social Security in coordination with my FERS annuity?
It depends on your financial needs and life expectancy. Many FERS retirees consider starting Social Security at full retirement age to avoid the reduction for early benefits. However, if you delay past full retirement age, your benefit increases up to age 70. If you retire before 62, you may receive the FERS Special Retirement Supplement until you become eligible for Social Security, which helps bridge the gap.
How does FEHB (Federal Employees Health Benefits) work in retirement?
If you’ve been enrolled in FEHB for the 5 years before retirement (or since your first eligible opportunity), you can carry your FEHB into retirement. The government continues to pay a significant portion of the premium, and your plan options remain the same. Importantly, once you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part A and optionally Part B, you can use FEHB as your secondary coverage.
Will my survivor spouse continue to receive my annuity and benefits after I pass away?
Yes, if you elect a survivor benefit at retirement. You can choose to provide your spouse with 25% or 50% of your unreduced annuity. This also allows your spouse to continue FEHB coverage after your death. Keep in mind, electing a survivor benefit reduces your monthly annuity while you’re alive.
Are my CSRS or FERS retirement benefits taxable?
Yes. A portion of your annuity is taxable at the federal level. The non-taxable portion represents your after-tax contributions to the retirement system. Most states also tax your federal retirement income, though some do not or offer partial exemptions. A tax advisor can help calculate your exact tax liability.
Can I work after retirement and still collect my FERS/CSRS pension?
Yes, but with caveats. If you work for a non-federal employer, your pension isn’t affected. However, if you return to work for the federal government, your pension may be offset by your salary unless you’re in a special rehired annuitant position. Also, earning above certain limits may reduce your FERS Special Retirement Supplement if you retired before 62.
